What are experts in the industry saying about this transition in the coming year? Check out CleanTechnica CEO Zachary Shahan’s discussion with a few experts to find out. 

Zach chatted with guests from GridBeyond, a company with a vision to build a shared energy economy. Our panelists were Deno Damaskos (Vice President Regulatory and Markets, GridBeyond). He has 30 years of energy market experience and has managed energy services products including distributed generation, efficiency, and demand response. Joe Hayden (VP of Revenue North America, GridBeyond) was included in the discussion. For 25 years, Joe has been managing teams selling wireless networks, IoT’s edge based solutions, as well as highly sophisticated automation solutions to the electric utility, security, and LED lighting industries. Mark Lewis (Manager Director at Lime Rock New Energy) also weighed in. Mark brings nearly 20 years of experience in the energy transition as an investor and as a business leader and entrepreneur. He focuses on partnering with great businesses that are helping to address climate and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. 

When Mark was asked what major global energy trends and challenges are in the coming year, he responded that it “has to be energy security … and supply, the more extreme weather we’re seeing.” Deno chimed in to add that another trend is the “incentives associated with the infrastructure … there’s a huge amount of money being moved towards clean energy … it’s going to be sort of transformational as there’s a 10-year scope to this.” Joe added another challenge to consider: “what’s been an overarching issue for the economy for the last 24 months, maybe longer, are the supply chain issues … with the opportunity around the economics and the opportunity around addressing your ESG goals.” 

Massive change is coming, thanks to the legislative and policy achievements of the first two years of the Biden administration. The current global energy crisis, which has led to sky-high prices and a weakening world economy, is set to only increase the attractiveness of renewables going forward. As renewable penetration on the grid continues to increase, technologies that can provide grid services and on-demand supply or demand reduction are expected to follow. 

In this webinar, we examined key trends that will be at the forefront of discussions about developments in the energy sector in 2023 and beyond. We also took some great questions from the audience like “What is the role of artificial intelligence so far in North America? Any current applications to showcase in regards to integrating renewable sources into the grid or mitigating outages?”
